In Chapter 51, page 17 of the manga, there’s a crucial moment in the fight between Zoro and Mihawk. During this intense battle, Zoro uses his powerful Santoryuu Ougi (Three-Sword Style Secret Technique). Mihawk’s reaction to this technique is quite telling—he looks shocked and starts sweating. This reaction suggests that Zoro’s fighting style might remind Mihawk of a similar technique used by someone he fought in the past.

Could that someone be Zoro’s father, Roronoa Arashi? There’s a theory that Arashi was killed by a pirate, and Mihawk might have been that pirate. This theory is supported by an earlier fight between Zoro and S-Hawk, a copy of Mihawk. During this battle, Zoro notices that S-Hawk, unlike Mihawk, seems more human. This observation hints that Mihawk’s reaction to Zoro’s sword style is significant and might be connected to his past encounters with Zoro’s family.

So, why would Mihawk be fighting Zoro’s father? Zoro’s father was the grandson of Ryuma, a legendary swordsman. Swordsmanship clearly runs in their blood, and it’s likely that Arashi was a master swordsman himself. Mihawk, known as the world’s greatest swordsman, was always on the lookout for worthy opponents. It’s plausible that he crossed paths with Arashi and fought him.

After their battle, Arashi might have requested an honorable death rather than simply being defeated. This is similar to Zoro’s experience. Since Zoro was young and displayed incredible talent, Mihawk spared him, telling him to come back and challenge him again in the future. Mihawk’s hope was that Zoro would one day be strong enough to replace him as the world’s greatest swordsman.
